Written after the fact.
So, halfway through the first week I have definitely gained a new-found respect for my mother.
All during my school years, she worked as a full time elementary music teacher. She would leave at the same time as us in the morning and she usually made it home by 5 or 6 at the latest every night. Once she was home, with the rare exception of grading papers, she was home. I do not recall seeing her spend hours planning at home, most of her work was done at school before she left.
Why did I think of this now?
During this first week of classes, I have been furiously working at school from 8:45 in the morning until 3 or 6 (if I have activities scheduled after class) at night. Only to come home, fix something super quick to eat while I continue to plan for the next day’s classes until 11, midnight or even 1 o’clock at night!!
What all of this boils down to is that I am completely amazed at my mother and how much time she had for us. I didn’t notice it that much growing up, but now that I’m joining the ranks of teachers, wow! She was amazing.
People keep telling me that it will get easier and I hope so, but right now I’m having a hard time seeing it! If anyone has suggestions to help, that would be wonderful!
Oh dear, I guess I better get back to work now.
